Sizing a mini-split for Perry County means accounting for what the climate actually asks of the equipment, not what a catalog suggests for a generic square footage. 82 severe weather events were recorded in Perry County, Kentucky between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing feature of the operating environment, and a system that was not installed with that load in mind will run harder and longer than it was designed to. A contractor quoting an install here has to treat local climate conditions as a specification, not an afterthought, because the difference shows up in the efficiency and durability of what gets mounted on the wall.

Basement or crawl space with concrete block walls and a bare wood joist ceiling, where insulated metal ductwork runs overhead, and a coiled flexible duct and two cardboard boxes sit on the concrete floor.

Ductless systems sidestep the ductwork question, but the electrical panel in a house of this vintage is a different matter. Half the homes in Perry County, Kentucky were built in 1985 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). Panels in homes built around that time were sized for the appliances and lighting loads of that era, and a mini-split draws differently than what those panels were designed to serve. A contractor quoting the job will open the panel box before the conversation about equipment goes far. What they find there sets the scope.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What HVAC Installation Involves

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing an interior wall-mounted air conditioning unit connected by a line to an outdoor condenser beside the exterior wall.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room being conditioned, where it draws in room air and delivers treated air back into the space. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a pad or bracket along an exterior wall, and it houses the compressor and the components that drive the whole system.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small opening in the wall, carrying the refrigerant that links the indoor and outdoor sides. A condensate drain line also runs from the indoor head to the outside, clearing the moisture the air handler pulls from the air.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your specific home.
