Sizing a mini-split in Whitley County requires more than matching square footage to a BTU chart. 108 severe weather events were recorded in Whitley County, Kentucky between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is part of the normal operating environment, and a contractor who ignores it when calculating load, selecting equipment, or specifying mounting locations is setting the system up to run harder than it was designed for. A unit that would perform adequately somewhere calmer will cycle more often, strain its compressor sooner, and fall short on the days it is needed most.

The electrical panel in homes of this vintage was designed around loads that bear little resemblance to what a modern mini-split draws. Half the homes in Whitley County, Kentucky were built in 1987 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in Whitley County has to pull the panel before the equipment conversation starts, because undersized service means the circuit work becomes part of the job whether it was budgeted that way or not.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Assessed

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by refrigerant lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It draws room air across its coil and moves treated air back into the space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and houses the compressor and the main mechanical components of the system.

A set of refrigerant lines runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line also exits the indoor unit and directs moisture outside. The wiring that ties the indoor and outdoor units together runs alongside those lines.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your home and how each piece relates to your specific installation.
