Sizing a mini-split here is a local question before it is a catalog question. 86 severe weather events were recorded in Wolfe County, Kentucky between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is part of the normal operating environment a system gets installed into, and a contractor factors that into how the unit is sized, where the outdoor head is placed, and how the refrigerant lines are run. A unit undersized for conditions this county actually sees will run hard and fall short. Getting the install right at the start is cheaper than correcting it later.

The electrical panel in much of Wolfe County's housing was sized for appliances and systems that drew considerably less current than a mini-split demands. Half the homes in Wolfe County, Kentucky were built in 1990 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting an installation here will open the panel first, because what it can handle determines whether new circuits are part of the job or whether the service itself has to be upgraded before the equipment goes in. That finding sets the price more than the unit does.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house with a shingled gable roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by piping to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on a wall inside the room and delivers conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the home, usually on a pad or bracket against an exterior wall, and houses the compressor and fan that drive the whole system.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small hole in the wall, carrying the refrigerant that lets the system do its work. A condensate drain line runs alongside it to carry moisture away, and a control wire connects the indoor and outdoor units so they operate together.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned and routed for your home.

Severe Weather Events in Wolfe County

Wolfe County's climate puts real demands on heating and cooling equipment, and those demands are shaped by how often conditions turn extreme. A mini-split sized and installed for local weather history holds up differently than one spec'd against a regional average.
